Where to Stay in Hoan Kiem — Hanoi's Walk-Everywhere Base

If you want to walk Hanoi rather than ride it, Hoan Kiem is the answer. The three properties below sit 140–630m from Hoan Kiem Lake and 930m–1.33km from the night market. The cost is the airport: 42–44 minutes to Noi Bai, against 29–30 minutes from the Ba Dinh side.

That is the whole Hanoi decision in two numbers. Decide whether you are shortening your sightseeing days or your transfer days, and the rest falls into place.

The walking radius is short

Hanoi sightseeing is organised around Hoan Kiem Lake. From the lake it is 140m to Apricot Hotel, 520m to Sofitel Legend Metropole, and 630m to Melia Hanoi — all under a ten-minute walk.

It is not only the lake. The night market is 930m–1.33km away and a Circle K is 450–940m from each, so an evening out is a short loop rather than a taxi ride. The railway station is close too: 740m from Melia (about four minutes by car), 1.14km from Apricot, 1.53km from the Metropole. If your itinerary continues by train, that is less distance spent dragging a suitcase.

What it costs you — 42–44 minutes to the airport

Staying in Hoan Kiem puts Noi Bai further away. All three sit 21.8–22.1km out at 42–44 minutes by car. Ba Dinh properties are around 20.9km out at 29–30 minutes. The distance gap is barely a kilometre; the time gap is 13–15 minutes each way, which looks like traffic on the approach into the centre rather than raw distance.

Round trip, that is close to half an hour. On a two-night stay, or with an early-morning departure or a late-night arrival, that number can matter more than the walking radius does.

How Ba Dinh differs

From Ba Dinh, Hoan Kiem Lake is 4.07–4.18km away. That is not a walk — every trip into the Old Quarter is a car. What you get in exchange is the shorter airport run and generally larger rooms (Lotte Hotel Hanoi · Hanoi Daewoo Hotel).

One assumption worth correcting: Ba Dinh is not closer to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. It is 1.91km from Melia and 1.93km from Apricot, against 2.35km from the Daewoo and 2.43km from the Lotte. West Lake is the real Ba Dinh advantage — 2.83–2.87km from there versus 3.81–4.36km from Hoan Kiem. So “Ba Dinh for the mausoleum” does not hold up; “Ba Dinh for West Lake and the airport” does.

The three are not interchangeable

Distances come from Agoda property data; the verification date is on each hotel page. This is research compiled before booking, not a first-hand stay report.
